Ashland, OR Parking

Sac City could learn a thing or two from cities with successful
downtowns.

A successful Downtown - in Sacramento? Are you mad? The ruin of Downtown Sacramento started when they sited I-5 to pass through the riverfront area. They then tore down everything on the north side of K from 3rd to 7th in 1963 (the blackmail Macy's demanded to locate on the south side - the city called it "redevelopment", one of the dirtiest words I can think of) and left it as a big hole in the ground until they started that pathetic mall in the '70s, which didn't fill in the area until the '80s. They also destroyed other great buildings and ruined the original Farmer's Market building. Forced an expansion of the Community Center, which destroyed more businesses. Destroyed old hotels and put up too many new ones. Have never encouraged any businesses outside expensive restaurants that would make Downtown a place to go at night. Put up many ugly buildings with high rents so no small businesses would have a chance. Face it, Max, Downtown Sacramento is a dead issue, and will end up like the Saca debacle writ large. The only thing that can save it is if they're smart enough to undo some of the damage, expand light rail and bus service and make the area worth visiting, working and living in. Tall task for such small people as our council members. I lived in Sacramento since 1960, so I know something of the history, and it's pretty ugly.
